Harvey Weinstein was saving the last dance for reshoots. On a recent appearance on the Films To Be Buried With Brett Goldstein podcast, whilst avoiding criticizing a 2024 movie that will remain nameless, Julia Stiles claims that reshoots on her 2000 rom-com Down To You got “so slimy” when Harvey Weinstein demanded a dance on the pool table that Stiles thought was “cheap” and didn’t add to the story. Stiles, who characterized the film’s director as “a very, very intelligent, capable guy” and the script as “very good,” says that once “Harvey Weinstein got his hands on it,” things “just became dumb.” The movie came about while teen rom-coms were exploding in popularity, and Weinstein wanted to capitalize on the trend. She claims that Weinstein began “pouring money at it in stupid ways,” eventually leading to reshoots regarding a dance scene.

“I’m told that [Weinstein] decided that because of the success of Save The Last Dance or the success of 10 Things I Hate About You with me dancing on the pool table, he needed to have me dancing in the film,” Stiles said. “I love to dance, but it was dumb. It was like, ‘Okay, let’s get her on a pool table.’ It wasn’t even imaginative,” Stiles added. “And I felt so slimy doing it the whole time. I don’t know if that actually made it in the film, but it was annoying, ’cause I was like, this is so cheap and it’s not adding to the story.”

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Weinstein, currently suffering from Leukemia while suing his brother Bob and awaiting retrial for a 2020 rape conviction, said Siles was “a talented and charismatic actress who naturally connects with audiences” and that he included “that scene in Down To You to enhance the film’s appeal, and her chemistry with Freddie Prinze Jr. made it work seamlessly.”
