Karoline Leavitt says it's Trump's nature to

Former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt is easing into her lucrative post-Trump Administration existence with a plush new gig as a Fox News contributor, which seems at odds with the usual MAGA practice of landing a plush gig in the Trump Administration after serving as a Fox News contributor. But whatever: Work is work, and work in media requires one to stay high-profile. Naturally, such an endeavor inevitably lands one on HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher, where Leavitt found herself Friday evening to discuss topics such as Maher’s enjoyment of White House cuisine, the abrupt fall of Leavitt’s successor, Katie Zacharia, and the mercurial nature of her former boss, Donald Trump.

As Maher lobbed softball questions at the former press secretary in his typical glad-handy, sauceless fashion (“You’re the youngest one to do this job—so what are you gonna do now?”), he affirmed the Trumpian sentiment that “America needs a ballroom” (referring to Trump’s ongoing plans to aesthetically overhaul the White House grounds), and ladled out tea for political gossip wonks who just have to know what Leavitt thought of Zacharia’s one-breifing stint in her old role. “Look, it’s a tough job, it’s a very tough job,” she said, laughing. “That pressure in that room is enormous. The press are vicious, and you know I give her credit for standing up there. And as the president said, it wasn’t a good fit, and that’s okay. I wish her well, and we’re on to the next. And he has a lot of options.”

When Maher expressed surprise that Trump would replace Leavitt so quickly with someone from “the bullpen,” she smiled. “Look, I mean, the president did have a hit show called The Apprentice, where he’s known for, you know, moving on from people. So hey, it’s in his nature to do that type of thing, I guess.” As for Leavitt’s political future, she said she remains close with the Trump administration and has been working with them in some capacity as the November midterm elections near. (What that work entails in her other role in the Trump-affiliated PAC, MAGA Inc., is a question Maher didn’t ask.) “The president sends his regards,” she told the host.
