Ken Russell's The Devils to possess movie theaters for another week

After more than half a century imprisoned on bootleg transfers and censored, low-resolution DVDs, Ken Russell’s The Devils has finally met the masses, and the masses are responding in kind. “We want The Devils,” the heretics who dared to perceive Russell’s sacrilegious delights confessed with their dollars, and Warner Bros. Clockwork is happy to give them what they want at long last. Earlier today, Clockwork announced that its inaugural re-release will extend its nationwide release by another week.

Clockwork re-released The Devils last week in 350 locations around the country. Advertised for a one-week limited engagement, the movie made $1.7 million. It didn’t make the top 10, but it outpaced the second weekend of The Social Reckoning to land at number 11. Its per-screen average of $4, 925 was higher than every other movie in the top 10, except the top two, Street Fighter and You Can See Everything. All told, this was a pretty exciting weekend for arthouses, which also saw plenty of interest in You Can See Everything and Sense And Sensibility. Though those movies are also available at your local multiplex too. It’s easy to see why audiences are flocking to The Devils. The new restoration is a stunner, with vivid colors and crisp audio that allows those who only saw the film on a laptop a chance to see how funny, scary, beautiful, and horrible it really is. What can we say, Oliver Reed’s Grandier was simply built different.
