Updated: Brazilian bombing plot fails to blow up Lady Gaga

Authorities apprehended two individuals in connection with a plot to bomb a Lady Gaga concert in Rio De Janeiro, the Associated Press reports. Lady Gaga’s free May 3rd concert at Copacabana Beach attracted over 2 million Little Monsters. That wouldn’t stand with the country’s homophobes, seething with resentment over the strength Gaga’s artistry provides the country’s LGBTQ+. Brazilian state police and Justice Ministry, per AP, “presented the bare outlines of a plot” by a group known for promoting hate speech against the country’s queer community. Too hateful to pressure youngsters into smoking cigs, the organization saw the planned bombing as a “collective challenge,” promising the nation’s teens that they’d be popular if they committed violent acts of terror on those trying to enjoy their lives for an hour.  As part of 15 raids on alleged members, authorities confiscated phones and electronic devices, but no weapons or explosives. Police claimed to have arrested the group’s leader in Rio Grande do Sul, roughly 20 miles from Rio de Janeiro, on illegal weapons charges, and a teenager for child pornography, hinting at how depressing this story gets.

Bomb plot aside, the concert went off without a hitch, attracting more attendees than Madonna’s free concert in May, which saw 1.6 million fans. Alas, Gaga couldn’t topple the biggest concert of all time. Rod Stewart’s 1994 New Year’s Eve concert at Copacabana Beach brought in over 4 million and remains the biggest free concert ever.

Update 5/4/25 3:00 P.M.: Lady Gaga has commented on the bombing plot against her Rio de Janeiro concert, which was thwarted by Brazilian authorities.

“We learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning,” a spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. “Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks. Her team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert and all parties were confident in the safety measures in place.”
