Peacock lays Laid to rest after one season
Introducing Endless Mode: A New Games & Anime Site from Paste

Laid is set for an eternal dry spell. Peacock has canceled the rom-com mystery starring Oscar-nominee Stephanie Hsu and Girl Zosia Mamet after one season of horizontal hustling through Hsu’s character’s sexual failures caused by a self-described murderous vagina. Laid centered around Hsu’s character Ruby, who notices a pattern emerging in her sexual history: Former partners keep dying. Along with her friend AJ (Mamet), Ruby retraces her sex steps in a rom-com whodunit, attempting to uncover what’s killing her former lovers. The series ran for eight episodes and ended with a setup for season two. Deadline reports that it’s unknown if the show is being shopped around, but maybe it would have better luck seducing a different streamer.

Rudely, the news comes despite A.V. Club‘s positive assessment of the show, which should warrant any show a second season—or at least a holiday special. Our TV writer, Saloni Gajjar, called the show “a cool, contemporary rom-com that works primarily because of its lighthearted tone and multidimensional heroine.” It is a bit surprising that Laid couldn’t break out in an era when people seem to clamor for whodunits and rom-coms, especially with two stars at the helm. Even stranger is that with the push of fellow mystery series Poker Face, Peacock didn’t see reason to give Laid time to grow. Or maybe, the streamer has already reached its maximum allotment for mysteries. After all, there’s a new season of Love Island to worry about.
