Leah Remini’s anti-Scientology crusade to continue on A&E

Ever since her very public departure from the Church of Scientology in 2013, actress Leah Remini has devoted herself to not only exposing the manipulative policies of the Church, but to humanizing and empathizing with those who find themselves caught up in what Remini brazenly calls a “cult.” (The Church of Scientology is famously litigious, thus the quotation marks and use of the word “brazenly.”) That crusade culminated in Leah Remini: Scientology And The Aftermath, an eight-part limited docuseries that aired on A&E earlier this year.

As well as providing a masterclass in long, pointy nails and concerned looks from the King Of Queens star, the show featured emotional interviews with former Church members on the many ways Scientology brainwashed them, bankrupted them, broke up their families, and generally tried to ruin their lives. The first season ended on a cliffhanger positively drenched in no-comment legalese, but now A&E is giving Remini and sometimes co-host Mike Rinder, a former senior Scientology official, the opportunity to resolve that with a second season of the show.

The second season will consist of 10 episodes “that will further explore accounts of former members whose lives have been significantly impacted by the Church’s practices,” according to a press release from the network. There’s no mention of Rinder and Remini’s proposed legal action from the season one finale in the press release, but Remini does say, “we felt compelled to proceed with another season to continue to reveal truths and seek justice for all victims.”

No date has been set as of yet for the new season, but fans looking for a fix may enjoy Remini’s recent discussion of the show on RuPaul’s podcast in the interim.
