Liz Meriwether says maybe the real New Girl reunion was the weird little feuds we had along the way

The New Girl “reunion” situation has, of course, been massively exacerbated by the collection of delightfully defective personalities Meriwether cast in the series in the first place; at different points over the last several years, stars Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, and Max Greenfield have all loudly claimed that a) a reunion is happening, and b) that it’s one of the other guys’ fault that it hasn’t happened yet. (Often with strident assertions that the co-star in question “hates the fans.”) Greenfield most recently dragged Meriwether into the mix, claiming that he’d seen “amazing” scripts from her for a revival, an assertion Meriwether has now cheerfully denied. “I don’t even have the scripts written for things I need to have the scripts written for,” she told Variety. “There are no scripts.”

For what it’s worth, Meriwether doesn’t sound mad that her former cast members have been extending the show’s ethos of fucking with your friends out into infinity like this. “I’ve been enjoying this thing, whatever this is, this back-and-forth between the cast and me. I think this is the show,” she said with a laugh. “And maybe, in the world of the internet, maybe the show is just this. These little videos. Like maybe that’s the reunion? I don’t know.” Truly: Perhaps the New Girl reunion really was the extended trolling campaign lobbed at your friends every time one of you makes a daytime talk show appearance we made along the way.
