It’s been years since Mariah Carey was associated with anything resembling sunshine or days on the beach, but Sabrina Carpenter isn’t the only one gunning for song of the summer this year. Carey just released a new single called “Type Dangerous,” which aims to soundtrack sultry nights that, for the first time in a very long time, have nothing to do with Santa.

It’s Carey’s first solo, non-Christmas song in six years. In 2019, she released “In The Mix,” an original theme song for ABC’s Mixed-ish. Before that, her last studio album was 2018’s Caution. She also released an album for her Apple TV+ Christmas special and a handful of special anniversary editions of her previous albums in the interim.

“Type Dangerous” put Carey in the studio with N.W.I. and Daniel Moore (per Pitchfork), where she also sampled Eric B. & Rakim’s “Eric B. Is President.” It sounds like there’s more original music coming. “I’m so excited to finally be releasing ‘Type Dangerous’ into the world!” the singer wrote in a statement. “I’ve been locked up in the studio for quite some time working my behind off on new music, and I’m thrilled for the unveiling of it to my fans, starting with ‘Type Dangerous’!”

Don’t worry too much, Christmas lovers; the queen isn’t showing any signs of abandoning her favorite holiday. In March, a judge ruled in Carey’s favor in a copyright suit brought against her annual chart-topper “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” and she was just added as a Fortnite skin decked out in all her holiday garb last winter. She’ll be back in her big ice block in no time.
