The Hasbro cinematic universe is growing. Maya Hawke is the first star to join Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment’s upcoming live-action Magic: The Gathering movie, Deadline reports. Details about Hawke’s role have not been revealed, but according to Deadline, she’ll be a key character in the planned ensemble cast. Producers were reportedly keen to bring Hawke on board. Matt Johnson (Nirvana The Band The Show The Movie) will direct the film and co-write the script with Aidan Fitzgerald and Noah Gardner. This casting news marks the first major production update for the project, which is based on the world’s first (and still hugely popular) trading card game. The tabletop game was created in 1993 and has since expanded to competitive tours, MagicCon conventions, and collaborations with other franchises.

In February 2025, Deadline reported that Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment were developing a live-action film and television universe centered on Magic: The Gathering. “We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering,” Legendary’s Mary Parent said at the time. “Alongside the fantastic Hasbro team, we look forward to creating a multimedia universe that thrills longstanding fans and creates a broad wave of new ones.” Hawke has an impressive resume (and Instagram follower count) that backs Legendary and Hasbro’s reported interest in her. The actor became a fan-favorite addition to Stranger Things when she joined during season three as Robin Buckley, and voiced the fast-talking Anxiety in Inside Out 2. Next, she’ll play the younger version of Wiress in The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping, a prequel centered on 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy.
