The age of artificial intelligence is upon us, and not even our enigmatic celebrities are free from their grift.

Mia Goth would like to know why Instagram allows AI Mia Goth use her identity

Mia Goth is just like us. She uses Instagram and recently had an AI bot steal her name and likeness for posts celebrating her recent divorce filings. Last week, Goth filed for divorce from Shia LaBeouf, ending their 10-year relationship. Though Goth might celebrate excising a chaotic and violent man from her life, she’s doing so privately and not on Instagram, where she could be receiving the sweet dopamine rush of likes and comments from her followers. Except she doesn’t have Instagram, nor any social media accounts, which is why she’s none too pleased that Instagram allowed a so-called fan account to create a “miagoth_” page, receive a verification badge, and post AI-generated simulations of Goth listening to Beyoncé while wearing a shirt that reads, “My ex is my biggest fan.”

Per The Verge, hundreds of thousands of would-be Goth supporters interacted with the post, which, in turn, inspired headlines from celebrity news outlets like OK! and People. It’s another one of the great long-tail effects of selling verification, as Meta started doing a few years back, instead of, you know, using it for verification. But it’s important to let grifters and people who want to pretend they’re celebrities buy their online social status, even to the detriment of a stable reality.

Goth’s representatives have filed “multiple complaints with Instagram,” asking the social media giant to remove the account. In a statement to The Verge, one of her reps, Christine Tripicchio, confirmed Goth doesn’t use social media and wondered why this “verified fan account” is allowed to “post counterfeit, AI images” of her client. “The fact that this fan account meets Instagram’s criteria to qualify for a ‘blue check’ is disconcerting on a fundamental level,” Tripicchio continues. “Beyond that, it is incomprehensible that Instagram evidently prioritizes the dissemination of forged and manipulated images over the protection and integrity of a public figure’s likeness.” Goth’s team filed multiple moderation issues to complete silence? Celebrities really are just like us.
