Michael Mann hospitalized after accidentally shooting his leg at a gun range

Michael Mann is on the mend after accidentally shooting himself in the leg. “On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released,” Mann’s reps said in a statement to Variety. His reps also said that he’s an experienced shooter with years of practice, and the wound was “subcutaneous and minor.” Per the L.A. Police Department, Mann accidentally shot himself in the leg while at a gun range in Los Angeles. According to TMZ, which was the first to report the news, Mann was engaging in target practice at The Range LA, a sanctioned gun range, around 4 p.m. when the shooting occurred. An ambulance later transported him to a local hospital.

Mann is currently gearing up to co-write and direct Heat 2, a sequel to his 1995 crime drama that featured a memorable bank robbery shootout sequence. He previously recalled using live ammunition in all the training for the first movie and making the aforementioned scene as realistic as possible by firing full-load blanks and recording the actual sound during the shooting. It’s unclear whether Mann was at the shooting range over the weekend to prepare for Heat 2. The movie was previously expected to begin filming in November, but star Stephen Graham recently told The Today Show that it’s now starting in January.
