Six years after director David Fincher allowed his hunting license to expire, Mindhunter star Holt McCallany says the show could return as three movies. The show ended after two seasons, with an open-ended conclusion to the Atlanta Child Murders case and a will-they-won’t-they bromance between Detective Holden Ford and the infamous serial killer Ed Kemper. Also, BTK was just heating up. Since then, thanks to an overall deal with the streamer, Fincher has remained at Netflix, directing Mank, The Killer, and, supposedly, an upcoming sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood. As if it wasn’t bad enough to deprive us of a 4K Blu-ray release of his two Netflix titles, they also deny us a third season of Mindhunter. However, according to McCallany, it may be hunting season yet again.

Speaking to CBR, McCallany says that the director told him a few months ago that “there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies.” However, to quell the inevitable riots over the whereabouts of this third season, the actor tempered expectations, saying, “But I think it’s just a chance.” Still, he continued, “I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.”

As much as we’d love to see another season of the show, we support waiting for a good script to be written. Producing the second season, as Variety notes, was extremely difficult, with Fincher firing the show runner, chucking out the script and show bible for the series, and moving to Pittsburgh to oversee production. At the time, Fincher said, “I’ll admit I was a little bit like ‘I don’t know that I’m ready to spend another two years in the crawl space.’” We don’t know if it helps, but we’d all appreciate Mr. Fincher returning to the crawl space.
