Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters could go in a new direction if season three roars ahead

Apple TV’s ambitious, time-spanning Godzilla series Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters will undergo a creative shake-up if the streamer and producer Legendary Television agree to move forward with season three. This comes from Variety, which reports that a new showrunner could take the reins for the next season, bringing in new writers and new Titans from Legendary’s leviathan franchise, the Monsterverse. Monarch, named after the secret multinational organization that tracks “Titans”, or MUTO (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms), is created by Matt Fraction (DC’s Batman ongoing) and Chris Black (Severance). Black is seemingly out as showrunner for season three, should it go forward, with Variety noting that “multiple individuals have been approached” to guide the series in a new direction.

Monarch‘s fresh batch of monsters may not be the only new faces coming to the series, either. Variety reports that the fate of the series’ non-scaly/fuzzy cast members, including Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, Wyatt Russell, and Kurt Russell, “remains unsettled.” However, this reported new direction for Monarch won’t affect the series‘ planned Wyatt Russell-led spin-off, announced last December, with Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s Joby Harold showrunning. With fresh faces and new announcements for Monarch still on the horizon, Legendary’s film division remains full steam ahead on its next Monsterverse feature, with Godzilla X Kong: Supernova expected to hit theaters on March 26, 2027.
