While three films in six years can only be considered “prolific” for a director who once took a 20-year break between projects, Terrence Malick does seem to be on a bit of a hot streak lately. The director is currently preparing for the release of his third film this decade, Knight Of Cups, starring Christian Bale as a screenwriter who tries to distract himself from the essential emptiness of his existence with sex, drugs, and generalized Hollywood excess, alongside Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman as the women in his life.
The trailer for the film—which we will hereafter refer to as “Terrence Malick’s Entourage”—starts out with the emptiness before transitioning into the sex and then the wonder, with an electronic soundtrack and quick cuts that make us wonder if Malick’s been hanging out with Gaspar Noe lately. We do get a shot of a baby on a sunlit beach, though, so some things remain the same. We’ll see how Malick manages to work man’s insignificance in the vastness of the cosmos into a club scene when Knight Of Cups hits theaters on March 4, 2016.
