Alexander Skarsgård's Murderbot just wants to watch soap operas in new trailer
Introducing Endless Mode: A New Games & Anime Site from Paste

Alexander Skarsgård is joining M3GAN in the yassified killer robot universe. Skarsgård stars in (and executive produces) Murderbot, Apple TV+’s new series about a socially awkward android that goes a little bit rogue. But while M3GAN loved to dance, Murderbot—as it decides to name itself—prefers the simpler things in life: intergalactic soap operas and not making eye contact. What’s a poor security unit built exclusively for killing to do?

Based on Martha Wells’ novel The Murderbot Diaries, Murderbot follows its titular SecUnit as it navigates a personal existential crisis while on a dangerous mission with its human charges. “It seems like it’s going through something,” one of the humans says in the series’ new trailer as Skarsgård bugs out. If Rick And Morty‘s butter passing robot had a face, this is exactly what it would look like.

Speaking of Skarsgård’s face, don’t be alarmed when the Succession actor initially shows up as a featureless metal hunk. Murderbot gets its face—a “sweet face,” as one of the humans puts it—about halfway through the clip. Prior to that development, it uses its “eyes” to watch 7,532 hours of content (and counting) on the company channels, including an awesome-looking space opera called The Rise And Fall Of Sanctuary Moon “starring” John Cho, Jack McBrayer, Clark Gregg, and DeWanda Wise. If it weren’t so busy murdering baddies and debating its place in the universe, Murderbot could write for The A.V. Club.

Murderbot hails from Academy Award nominees Chris and Paul Weitz (About A Boy) and also stars Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones, and Tamara Podemski. The first two episodes premiere May 16 on Apple TV+, with the season’s remaining eight episodes following weekly through July 11.
