For better or for worse, there’s no argument that John Lennon and Yoko Ono are one of the 20th century’s most famous couples. Their relationship has already been explored in depth (including in the 2018 documentary John & Yoko: Above Us Only Sky) but there’s a new documentary in town that aims to give a new perspective to a duo a lot of people know a lot about as they stage their only concert as a couple.

Magnolia Pictures released the first trailer today for One To One: John & Yoko, a documentary that arrives with the blessing of their son Sean. The trailer finds the couple amid their lives in 1970s New York City, with Lennon entranced by the Village and Ono reflective about her reputation in town. “I was considered a bitch in this society,” she says in a voiceover. “Since I met John, I was upgraded into a witch.” Lennon, meanwhile, recognizes how his relationship with Ono has changed him and his art. “I fell in love with an independent, creative genius,” he says. “I started waking up.”

“An expansive and revelatory inside look at John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s life in Greenwich Village in the early 1970s, ONE TO ONE: JOHN & YOKO delivers an immersive cinematic experience that brings to life electrifying, never-before-seen material and newly restored footage of John and Yoko’s only full-length concert,” reads an official press release, referencing the trailer’s Madison Square Garden show. “Featuring mind-blowing music newly remixed and produced by Sean Ono Lennon, the film is a seismic revelation that will challenge pre-existing notions of the iconic couple.”

One To One: John & Yoko premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and had runs at both Telluride and Sundance. The documentary will open in IMAX theaters on April 11.
