“As Smith suffers profound losses, grief and gratitude are braided through years of caring for her children, rebuilding her life, and, finally, writing again—the one constant on a path driven by artistic freedom and the power of the imagination to transform the mundane into the beautiful, the commonplace into the magical, and pain into hope,” the book’s synopsis continues.
“It took a decade to write this book, grappling with the beauty and sorrow of a lifetime,” Smith wrote in her own statement, per The Guardian. “I’m hoping that people will find something they need.” In an Instagram post announcing the release, Smith also shouted out her mother and father who “inspired much of my next book,” which she characterized as “a bright and dark dance of life.”
This will be Smith’s fourth memoir, after Just Kids (2010), M Train (2015), and Year Of The Monkey (2019). The beloved artist is also keeping quite busy this year. This February, she also announced the Horses 50th anniversary tour, which will see her play the seminal 1975 album in full every night. Smith hits the road for the European leg of the tour October 6. Bread Of Angels releases November 4, and she heads to the U.S. for the tour’s second leg six days later.
