Paul Bettany compromised his vision filming VisionQuest

Paul Bettany took his Vision performance so far that he popped multiple blood vessels while filming his standalone series VisionQuest. “I was pretending to have a device on my head that is doing something to my brain, and I was just wildly overacting, and I blew out about 10 blood vessels in my eye,” Bettany said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “It was a lesson in less is more.” Kimmel cracked a joke about Bettany’s ability to pop a blood vessel on command, prompting laughter from the audience—which quickly turned to horrified and grossed-out gasps as the host showed a close-up photo of Bettany’s red left eye. The actor said that he was stuck like that for two weeks, and it “must have cost production so much” to edit his eye and cover up the injury. “The irony is the actor playing Vision is kind of myopic, you know,” Bettany added. “Can’t see a thing when I take my glasses off, which is great, depending on the actor.”

Bettany has played the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s maroon-hued synthezoid for a long time, to say the least. The actor first entered the MCU as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) personal AI, in 2008’s Iron Man. Then in the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tony and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) transferred the AI into a synethzoid body, bringing Vision to life. Without getting too deep into his winding MCU history, Vision has experienced variations of life, death, and rebirth, all of which have led him to his standalone Disney+ series VisionQuest, where he spends much of the time grappling with his identity crisis (understandably so) and clashing with James Spader’s prickly Ultron. The role has required Bettany to spend hours in the makeup chair over the years and rely on his imagination while acting opposite people and objects that are later added in post-production. During his recent late-night appearance, Bettany said that he doesn’t bother dressing up for Halloween, having spent years on end in costume as Vision—not that he’s complaining about the long-running gig. “It’s a lot, but I’m well-paid for it,” he said.
