A suspect in Michael’s murder is revealed in this exclusive clip from PBS drama Trespasses

Trespasses hasn’t exactly been an easy watch, and things seem unlikely to get less fraught or emotional in this final episode, which must deal with the aftermath of a brutal murder, a tragically heartbreaking end to a secret love affair, and a shocking revelation about who is likely responsible for both those things.

Based on the critically acclaimed debut novel by Louise Kennedy, the four-part PBS drama is set in 1970s Belfast during the height of the period of sectarian violence known as the Troubles. One part forbidden love story and one part painful treatise on violence and grief, it follows Cushla (Furious breakout Lola Petticrew), a young Catholic school teacher who falls in love with the very married, very Protestant barrister, Michael Agnew (Tom Cullen). Their relationship has had an air of doomed tragedy about it from the very beginning—star-crossed doesn’t even come close—but even so, the sudden revelation that Michael had been shot and killed at the end of last week’s episode was a big shock. But things may yet get worse for Cushla in the finale, as it appears that Michael’s murderer is someone she knows.

In this exclusive clip from the series’ final episode, Cushla and her mother, Gina (Gillian Anderson), offer shelter to the McGeown family after their house is firebombed. (The McGeowns have been the targets of ostracism and violence throughout the series due to the parents’ interfaith marriage.) But the already tense moment becomes even more fraught when Betty McGeown (Emily Taafe) admits that her son Tommy (Conlaoch Gough-Cunningham) has been charged with Michael’s murder.

Cushla has been desperately trying to help both Tommy and his brother Davy (Daithí Ó hAragáin) all season, both because she’s a kind person and because she now has a uniquely sympathetic understanding of the struggles of blended Catholic/Protestant relationships. Betty insists the RCU (Royal Ulster Constabulary) is just looking for a quick conviction, but Tommy recently dropped out of school and has been running with a dangerous crowd. Could he truly be responsible for Michael’s death? And if he is, what drove him to shoot a man he very likely never even met? We’ll find out when the Trespasses finale airs Sunday on PBS.
