Robert Pattinson's Chris Hansen is going completely insane in Primetime trailer

The last few years have made it abundantly clear that Robert Pattinson excels when he’s playing a freakish man with emotional problems. It’s even better when he gets to put on some kind of strange vocal inflection. All of this is present in the promising first full trailer for Primetime, the new A24 film from Lance Oppenheim centered on the NBC show To Catch A Predator and its host Chris Hansen. This show has already been subject to some cultural reappraisal in recent years, and the results have not been positive for the series’ legacy; as the documentary Predators argues, the series was often less about protecting children than about entrapping people and getting them placed on sex offender registries in front of millions of viewers. If the first trailer for Primetime is any indication, this film doesn’t seem like it’ll have much interest in humanizing Hansen or examining the ways in which he might be right, actually. In fact, he seems driven to succeed no matter the human cost, quickly unraveling, and totally insane.

Pattinson, who also produces Primetime, stars alongside Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, and Phoebe Bridgers. The film will premiere at the Venice Film Festival before opening in theaters on September 25.
