Punch the clock at the Death Star with Zahir Batin’s photos of Stormtroopers at work and play

Malaysian photographer Zahir Batin isn’t the first to use Star Wars action figures as inspiration; just ask these 36 photographers who all use them in their work. But Batin’s photos, which pose Stormtrooper and Clone Trooper action figures in prosaic outdoor settings, nevertheless raise some interesting questions about the daily lives of Star Wars cannon fodder. Since target practice has clearly been canceled, what do they do all day? Where do they live? How do they get to work? Do they know they’re clones? How long is their lunch break? Do they dream of quitting the Grand Army of the Republic to start that woodworking business they’ve been talking about? Batin’s photos won’t answer most of these questions, but they do reveal one sad, if not terribly surprising truth: Only clones mourn the death of a clone.
