Ryan Murphy's satirical Netflix series The Politician gets synopsis, premiere date
American Horror Story and Pose creator Ryan Murphy will christen his pivot to Netflix with The Politician, a comedy starring Pitch Perfect’s Ben Platt as a teenage go-getter with eyes on the Oval Office. Today, the streamer has shared a synopsis for the satirical comedy series, as well as a premiere date for its first season.
First, the synopsis:
Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), a wealthy student from Santa Barbara, California, has known since age seven that he’s going to be President of the United States. But first he’ll have to navigate the most treacherous political landscape of all: Saint Sebastian High School. To get elected Student Body President, secure a spot at Harvard, and stay on his singular path to success, Payton will have to outsmart his ruthless classmates without sacrificing his own morality and carefully crafted image. Full of dark comedy and sly satire, Ryan Murphy’s The Politician offers a rare glimpse into just what it takes to make a politician.
As we’ve previously reported, subsequent seasons will find Payton partaking in a number of campaigns as he scales the political ladder. Whether it gets those seasons is yet to be seen—it will; it’s Ryan Murphy—but we’re guessing it will culminate with him either sassing the alt-right into submission or turning into a Trump-like demagogue. Either one works.
The impressive supporting cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Lucy Boynton, Bob Balaban, and Jessica Lange, who we’re assuming is taking over the role previously held by Barbra Streisand.
The Politician premieres on September 27. See a poster for it below.
