Let’s pretend for one second that Sirens was called literally anything else. Netflix describes the forthcoming “dark comedy” as follows: “Devon (Meghann Fahy) thinks her sister Simone (Milly Alcock) has a really creepy relationship with her new boss, the enigmatic socialite Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore). Michaela’s cult-ish life of luxury is like a drug to Simone, and Devon has decided it’s time for an intervention, but she has no idea what a formidable opponent Michaela will be.” It’s pretty safe to say that the audience does, though. We’re going out on a limb here, but could Michaela perhaps be… a siren? Totally random guess.
Of course, the sirens at play here could be metaphorical. The series’ logline goes on to describe it as a “darkly funny exploration of women, power, and class” set on an island where “mansions and hydrangeas abound,” per Tudum. Still, series creator Molly Smith Metzler (Maid) certainly seems to be hinting at something more concrete when she tells the press site the “story has a lot of teeth… There are real moments of drama, and it’s going to make people uncomfortable. Operatic is a word I like to use to describe it. It’s a true dark comedy—and it’s got a Greek mythology vibe.” Maybe it has a “Greek mythology vibe” because that’s where sirens are originally from? Again, just a thought.
While the title may be a bit spoilery, none of this is to detract from the show itself, which does have a great team behind it. In addition to Fahy, Alcock, and Moore, the five episode series also features Kevin Bacon, Glenn Howerton, Bill Camp, Felix Solis, and Josh Segarra. Margot Robbie is producing along with Dani Gorin and Tom Ackerley under their LuckyChap banner.
Whether mythology or metaphor, Sirens swims onto the streamer May 22. Check out some first look images below (but maybe tie yourself to a mast before you scroll):
