Apple TV’sSmall Prophetsis one of the strangest—and strangely sweet—shows on television. A story about loneliness, unresolved grief, and magic both literal and figurative, it’s a warm, low-stakes exploration of many timeless truths of the human condition.
The eccentric comedy, which wraps up its first season this week and has already been renewed for a second, follows an oddball hardware store employee (Pearce Quigley) who dabbles in a bit of medieval alchemy in an attempt to finally get answers about his missing girlfriend, who disappeared seven years prior. Using bits of junk from around his garden shed and some light chanting, he manages to create several homunculi, small human-like creatures born and nurtured in jars, who are believed to be able to answer questions about the past, present, and future. (They don’t like bright lights or loud noises, though. Just FYI.) Yet, the existence of tiny prophets in jars is somehow not the most interesting element of this series, which finds the extraordinary in the everyday textures of life and the bonds formed between the people who live it. It’s a vibe reflected in this exclusive clip from the season finale, which sees two lonely people find connection in each other. (Just perhaps not quite in the way you expect.)
For much of the season, we’ve seen grumpy teenager Elliot (Adam Wright) pop up in the background of various scenes in Michael’s (Quigley) neighborhood, treading the same path on his bike in a continuous circuit of isolation. It’s something that happens often enough that Kasey (Lauren Patel) even remarks on it, encouraging Michael to reach out to the boy. Here, however, it is Elliot who breaks his own cycle of loneliness, stopping to share an unexpected moment with his neighbor over their love of the band Modest Mouse. It’s a silent but sweet affirmation between two lost souls that is such a microcosm of what makes this show great—and the backing track is killer, as well.
The season finale of Small Prophets airs on Wednesday, November 4, on Apple TV.
