Star Trek: Discovery boldly goes into its second season

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Thursday, January 17. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

Star Trek: Discovery (CBS All Access, 8:30 p.m.): After no shortage of turmoil, the second season of Discovery arrives tonight, and it’s immediately off to the races. The first season ended on a doozy of a cliffhanger, and it would seem that the second picks up right where the crew of the Discovery left off: preparing to face down some deadly threat. That threat, it would seem, is the Red Angel.

Whether or not Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) intrigues you, whether or not you’re concerned by the off-camera drama, and whether or not you’re into new Spock’s facial hair, surely we can all agree on one thing: The presence of Tig Notaro is still really fucking cool. Zack Handlen will have his thoughts on all of the above.

A Discovery Of Witches (Sundance TV, 3:01 a.m.): This adaptation of Deborah Harkness’ All Souls Trilogy has the potential to stumble into some pretty gnarly narrative pitfalls, but we’re intrigued all the same. The reasons can be summed up in eight words: Matthew Goode Alex Kingston Valarie Pettiford Lindsay Duncan. That’s a hell of a cast, and that’s not even the complete list. The entire season is available this morning; a second and third season have already been greenlit. If supernatural love stories and/or good-looking Brits with serious acting chops are your thing, you know where to turn. (Pettiford is American, but still. Point stands.)
