Stephen Colbert doesn't miss late night at all, says Stephen Colbert

The former Late Night host made the remarks (and shaved his beard) on Tuesday night's Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Stephen Colbert doesn't miss late night at all, says Stephen Colbert

After the initial sting of losing one’s job wears off, a wave of euphoria soon follows, an irrepressible feeling that one can do whatever one chooses with one’s life—even, say, draft a screenplay for a Lord Of The Rings movie, because wouldn’t that be fun? Free from the late-night rigmarole of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and fresh off multiple Emmy wins for the show’s final season, Stephen Colbert joined Jimmy Kimmel Live! to josh with the host about life after late night, and the former television personality and budding screenwriter appeared pretty darn chipper about life’s next chapter. After he soaked up applause from his adoring audience, Colbert was asked if he missed the daily grind of standing before a studio audience in nice suits to wax funny about the ceaseless dirge of bad news. Naturally, Colbert was direct with his reply, before comparing the experience to drinking “a cup of poison”: “Nope! I have an opportunity to not think about the news every day, and I took it.”

This newfound freedom put Colbert in a giddy, almost Hobbit-like mood. After dodging a question about being congratulated by his former bosses at CBS for the Emmy wins (“I am not familiar with that organization—thank you for asking!”), Kimmel handed Colbert an electric shaver to cleave off his obligatory post-Late Night beard (his wife, Evie, apparently hated it). And to show how much of a good sport he is, and to show how generous a guest he can be now that his hosting days are behind him, Colbert announced to the audience that he had gifted Kimmel the Captain America shield Marvel Comics sent him during his Colbert Report tenure at Comedy Central. It was a passing of the torch to one of TV’s remaining late-night hosts, who thanked his guest by placing the shield in a place of honor on the Kimmel set. “I want to be able to see it when I’m doing the monologue every night, and so I’m going to put it right here for all time—or at least however much time we have left!”

Colbert’s visit with Kimmel was a genial, spirited conversation, and you can watch it below.
