“If privacy was a right and not a polite suggestion, I’m sorry, this entire industry would fall on its collective dick, but until that point, I’m gonna exploit the situation and make money,” says tech company CEO Duncan Park (Billy Magnussen) to a mixture of laughs and groans from the audience in a new clip from AMC’s forthcoming series The Audacity, which The A.V. Club can exclusively debut today. That mixture of laughs and groans seems to be exactly what the series is going for with its new, satirical look at Silicon Valley, as the cast attempts to explain the series’ tone in the new clip.

“I also was fortunate enough to work on Better Call Saul and Succession,” says The Audacity creator Jonathan Glatzer in the clip. “There was tragedy and there was farce, all in the same episode. Sometimes in the same scene.” Or, as Lucy Punch, who portrays Lili Park-Hoffsteader in the series, suggests, “I think it’s a very smart, beautifully-written telenovela, with a sprinkle of comedy.”

The clip also introduces us to its main characters in a bit more depth than we’ve gotten in the previous previews of the series. Glatzer describes Duncan as a “wannabe titan” who’s trying to ascend to billionaire status like all the Silicon Valley icons. Sarah Goldberg portrays Dr. JoAnne Felder, a therapist to said icons with a superiority complex, but who can’t even remember her son’s birthday. “He will manipulate her, and she’s gonna manipulate him, but it’s part of the bubble of Silicon Valley,” says Glatzer. “Everyone inside this bubble, once you enter into it, you lose your compass.”

The eight-episode first season of The Audacity premieres on Sunday, April 12, on AMC and AMC+, with a two-episode premiere on AMC+ and new episodes streaming weekly. On AMC, new episodes will air Sundays at 9 pm ET/PT.
