The dinosaurs get down to business in the new Jurassic World trailer
Largely eschewing the slow burn of the first Jurassic World trailer—where humans mostly marveled at the dinosaurs and ran from unseen predators—this new Super Bowl spot would like to remind viewers that, yes, people certainly will be dying or nearly dying from their encounters with prehistoric beasts. Whether by showing the new D-Rex grabbing a park worker with its massive claws, or a pteranodon snatching an innocent bystander from the park’s thoroughfare, the preview makes it clear that, even more than 20 years later, we’re still proving Ian Malcolm’s theory that running a zoo full of dinosaurs is really dangerous and dumb.
But director Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) isn’t just interested in the original film’s themes: He’s also attempting to recreate many of Steven Spielberg’s most iconic shots. The new trailer includes a familiar glimpse of Isla Nublar from above as a helicopter glides over the treetops, as well as a shot of an injured dinosaur lying in the grass that recalls the sick triceratops scene in Jurassic Park. The spot even concludes with a shot looking down at the faces of screaming children as a monster tries to break into their vehicle, à la Lex and Tim.
In fact, everything seems pretty status quo at the park. Humans debate ethics, and then humans are eaten. The only twist seems to be that Chris Pratt’s character wants to eliminate the threat with his gang of trained raptors. That also seems really dangerous and dumb, but we’ve got the rest of this franchise to explore that notion. Jurassic World arrives June 12, 2015.
