Keri Russell puts shady geopolitics on notice in new trailer for The Diplomat season four

Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler puts the geopolitical “culture of consistent lawlessness” on notice in the latest season four trailer for The Diplomat. The Netflix series returns on October 15 for another bout of fraught international and intermarital intrigue, with crisp, thematically overlapping bon mots such as “A cover-up is not a solution, it’s just a minute to get your pants on.” Of course, now that her Vice President husband, Hal (Rufus Sewell), is tighter than ever with icy-cool President Grace Penn (Allison Janney, who snagged an Emmy for the role Monday night), navigating the executives’ season three collusions, not to mention finding space for connection and/or ambassador-y face-time, is trickier than ever. Luckily, Wyler is adept at clearing a room of high-ranking muckety-mucks for a debrief with her hubby—er, not necessarily the sexy kind.

The synopsis for the new season:

“In Season Four of The Diplomat, two marriages threaten to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war. Kate and Todd, at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home. Four Emmy nominees paint an unmissable portrait of two marriages: Keri Russell as Ambassador Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn, and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn.”
