While the first trailer for Jupiter Ascending offered up plenty of epic shots of Mila Kunis falling off stuff, the second provides some much-needed plot context for its space battles. As previously reported, Channing Tatum stars as Caine, an alien bounty hunter sent to collect Mila Kunis’ Jupiter, a Russian cleaning woman who happens to have the same DNA as the Queen of the Universe. When Caine decides to save Jupiter rather than kill her, she’s brought into conflict with an even greater force: Eddie Redmayne’s Balem, the head of one of the most powerful dynasties in the universe, and the guy who currently owns the title to the Earth. In typical villain fashion, he’s determined to kill her—or harvest the Earth—rather than relinquish his control. Jupiter, meanwhile, must accept the enormous responsibility of claiming ownership of the Earth, while also finding time to mack on Caine and appear in gorgeous space dresses.
The latest original sci-fi epic from Lana and Andy Wachowski has a typically complex plot, which all sounds slightly silly when written out, but translates into something much more compelling onscreen. Overall, this second trailer is fairly similar to the first, and it even reuses most of the same shots—although those shots are admittedly stunning, especially in a movie theater. Jupiter Ascending hits theaters July 18.
