The Night’s Watch are actually just wearing IKEA rugs

Befitting a series about warring families, it has recently come to light that Game Of Thrones gets some of its costumes straight from IKEA—namely, the cloaks worn by the Night’s Watch. The furs worn by those men banished to the cold, neglected, Westerosi equivalent of a starter apartment are, in fact, just cheap IKEA rugs that have been properly ravaged, Quartz reports, picking up on a detail that was first relayed last year in a talk by GOT costume designer Michele Clapton. You can hear it for yourself around the 27-minute mark.

“We cut and we shaved them, and then we added strong leather straps and then breakdown, which is like a religion on Game Of Thrones,” Clapton told a crowd at Los Angeles’ Getty Museum, referring to the industry process of making things look worn and tired, presumably by having them shop at IKEA. “I want the audience to almost smell the costumes,” she added. To achieve this effect, Clapton has my old roommate James over to spill a bong on them.

The rugs were also “waxed and frosted” to make them look as though they belonged in the harsh, wintry lands of The Wall, adding that —in addition to being cost efficient—it’s all aesthetically befitting with a ragtag group that would likely just take whatever clothing scraps they had handy and dye them black. Clapton doesn’t specify which rug, although the Rens seems like a contender should you be looking for your own, whether it’s for cosplay purposes or just for giving your living room an inexpensive hint of ski lounge chic. Don’t forget the Björksnäs!

Also, those dragons are all actually Hemnes dressers.
