Anything of interest happen in the three years since The Sandman first premiered on Netflix? Hmm, let’s see… Hollywood strikes… presidential election… and, oh yes, all of Neil Gaiman’s characters are being shuffled off stage left after he was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women. That really put a damper on the upcoming installment of Netflix’s fantasy series, though showrunner Allan Heinberg claimed when the cancellation was announced earlier this year that two seasons was always the plan. Whether you believe that or not, we now have our first look at the final episodes in The Sandman season two teaser.
The bulk of the teaser, and what fans will likely be most excited to see, is a family reunion of The Endless—Dream (Tom Sturridge), Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park), Despair (Donna Preston), Destiny (Adrian Lester), and Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles). (Destruction, played by Barry Sloane, doesn’t show up to the meeting—at least not yet.) After being called together, Dream “must face one impossible decision after another as he attempts to save himself, his kingdom, and the waking world from the epic fallout of his past misdeeds,” per the Netflix synopsis. “To make amends, Dream must confront longtime friends and foes, gods, monsters, and mortals. But the path to forgiveness is full of unexpected twists and turns, and true absolution may cost Dream everything. Based on the beloved award-winning DC comic series, the second season of THE SANDMAN will tell Dream’s story arc in full to its thrilling conclusion.”
Because this is Netflix, the final episodes will air in two “Volumes,” the first six episodes premiering on July 3 and the next five dropping on July 24. It’s an annoying way for the streamer to juice its numbers while sort of sticking to the binge model, but at least it’s a relatively healthy episode order for a Netflix show. In addition to The Sandman season two teaser, Netflix shared some first look photos that highlight the fantasy (and The Fates) to come. You can check out the new images below.
