Today in Star Wars rumors: J.J. Abrams is directing Star Wars after all
After a months-long confusing opening crawl full of obfuscation and misdirection, J.J. Abrams has been supposedly confirmed to direct Star Wars Into Dubiousness, despite his own oft-repeated denials that he would not be doing that very thing. Nevertheless, both Deadline and The Wrap seem to think it’s a done deal, with Deadline actually reporting, “It’s a done deal” and The Wrap echoing that sentiment, both quoting unnamed insider “sources” and “individuals with knowledge of the talks,” thus continuing down the established dark path of all Star Wars-related rumors to date.
Obviously, neither Disney/Lucasfilm nor Abrams have made any official comment on the report—which also claims that Ben Affleck was Abrams’ competitor for the job, thereby fulfilling the requirement of big-name franchise speculatin’ stories—and as you may recall, Abrams flat-out denied any involvement or even interest in tackling Star Wars, claiming “loyalty” to his own Star Trek series back in November. Should these reports prove true, long-divided Star Trek and Star Wars fans could now finally be brought together, united in skepticism over whether J.J. Abrams is going to fuck up their beloved stories.
