Shockingly, there may actually be some good news for Looney Tunes amidst all the anvils and boxes of TNT from Warner Bros. right now. Shelved and still-very-missed project Coyote Vs. Acme may win the case for its right to exist, per a new report from Deadline. The trade suggests that the studio is currently “deep in sale negotiations” with Gareth West’s Ketchup Entertainment, which similarly rescued The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie from the same fate as its title in 2021. (The Day The Earth Blew Up just premiered in theaters to over $5.6 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo.)

Ketchup Entertainment is reportedly negotiating an all-rights acquisition in the $50 million range, sources for the outlet report. The agreement isn’t finalized, but seems to be “heading in the right direction.” If all goes according to plan, audiences could watch the locked-away project in 2026.

The fully completed and audience-tested Coyote Vs. Acme—a hybrid live-action/animated Looney Tunes adventure starring Will Forte, John Cena, and Lana Condor—was canceled by Warner Bros. for a tax writeoff in 2023, to the outrage of its cast and crew, the animation community at large, and even a member of Congress. “My thoughts were that [the cancelation was] fucking bullshit,” Forte said in a recent interview. “It is such a delightful movie. It deserves so much better than it got. I can’t tell you possibly why the decision was made to not release it. But it makes my blood boil.”

Now people may get to see the film Forte described in a previous Instagram post as “super funny throughout, visually stunning, sweet, sincere, and emotionally resonant in a very earned way.” It’s a good thing too, because it’s getting harder to watch the original Looney Tunes cartoons by the day. Warner Bros. called wabbit season on the classic program’s back catalog earlier this week, deleting the 255 original episodes that still remained on Max. Maybe it’s time to consider trapping David Zaslav in a painting that looks like a tunnel.
