We’ll fake enough enthusiasm for Faking It to give it Top Pick

Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Tuesday, April 22. All times are Eastern.

Faking It (MTV, 10:30 p.m.): It’s 2014, so one of TV’s leading sources for youth programming ought to be broadcasting a show that centers on a homosexual romance. And maybe by 2015, we’ll get one about a real homosexual romance, not one that’s cooked up in a grab for high-school popularity like the relationship that Faking It is based on. Molly Eichel appreciates the effort, but wishes the show had the guts to do more than pay lip service to progressive attitudes among the teen set. But hey, at least blonde Bunhead Bailey Buntain is back on our TV screens! That’s a reason to grin and bear it through Faking It, right?

The Originals (The CW, 8 p.m.): Rowan Kaiser reviews the most exciting fictional series of events to take place in the marshy parts of Louisiana since Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded “Born On The Bayou.”

Fargo (FX, 10 p.m.): Change comes to Bemidji: For the remainder of the limited series, Todd VanDerWerff and Zack Handlen will crosstalk their way through each episode. You decide which one is Lester and which one is Lorne.

Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central, 10:30 p.m.): If the title of this week’s episode, “Boner Doctor,” is any indication, the Inside Amy Schumer crew began production on the half-hour by asking an improv-comedy audience for a suggestion of an occupation. Kate Knibbs is shaking her head: You should always lead with “proctologist,” imagined improv audience!

Between Alan Partridge’s radio roots and 24 Hour Party People’s Tony Wilson being Tony Wilson, Steve Coogan has surely accumulated plenty of musical knowledge through acting osmosis. (Despite Alan Partridge’s best efforts.) He puts that to the test with a HateSong interview today.

Deadliest Catch (Discovery, 9 p.m.): The 10th-season premiere promises a boat fire, meaning Deadliest Catch continues to live up to its title.

Brandi & Jarrod: Married To The Job (A&E, 9:01 p.m.): That abandoned storage locker A&E cracked open four years ago continues to yield dividends: Following in the spin-off footsteps of Barry Weiss, Jarrod Schulz and and Brandi Passante get their own space in which to entertainingly bicker (and continue the argument that season three of Kroll Show needs to absorb the ever-expanding Storage Wars universe.)

True Tori (Lifetime, 9:01 p.m.): Meanwhile, Lifetime presents a cautionary tale about putting your marriage on TV.

Stagecoach (TCM, 8 p.m.): It’s Frontier Day in the What’s On Tonight cinema section! Yee-haw! Marking the second night of John Wayne’s reign as TCM “Star of the Month,” the network presents a full night of John Wayne-John Ford Westerns, beginning with the film that made The Duke a star.

White Fang (Flix, 8 p.m.): Then, in the land that airlines, reality shows, and official state nicknames still refer to as America’s last remaining frontier, Ethan Hawke bonds with a wolf. Considering the way this movie ends, it’s a wonder it hasn’t spawned its own equivalent of the Before Sunrise/Before Sunset/Before Midnight trilogy.

NBA Playoff: Game 2: Hawks at Pacers (TNT, 7 p.m.): The Hawks pulled a big upset in game one, besting top-seed Indiana and getting Jeff Teague one step closer to achieving vengeance for a first-round loss to the Pacers last season.

Enjoy DVD releases from two of TV’s most renowned time travelers: Ken Burns (and his most recent PBS effort, The Address) and Doctor Who (represented by the second-doctor serial “The Web Of Fear”).
