Kids may be trashing movie theaters, but they’re also currently keeping the theatrical experience afloat. A Minecraft Movie just scored an additional $80.6 million at the box office, landing an easy win this past weekend over animated Charles Dickens-Jesus epic, The King Of Kings. While theaters may have to use a portion of that money to repair any damages caused by all that popcorn chucking and live chicken smuggling, there’s sure to be a good chunk left over. With its $80.6 million, A Minecraft Movie has now had not only the second best second weekend for a videogame movie ever (after The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023), but also the 16th best second weekend for any movie period, per Deadline. (The king of kings can’t even say that.) The Jason Momoa and Jack Black-led adventure has already surpassed $500 million at the global box office, and is projected to do the same domestically by the end of its run.

But while The King Of Kings couldn’t overpower the chicken jockey, it didn’t do too badly for itself either. The film just earned the best opening ever for an animated biblical epic with $19 million, taking the spot from DreamWorks’ The Prince Of Egypt ($14.5 million), which bowed in 1998. The King Of Kings appropriately leads a whole flock of new releases, including Rami Malek spy thriller The Amateur, A24’s Warfare, Blumhouse iPhone horror Drop, and fellow Jesus story The Chosen: Last Supper Part 3. That’s a lot of new blood, with more soon to come in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners (next weekend) and the MCU’s Thunderbolts* (May 2). Hopefully, all these fresh titles will start to revive what’s been an incredibly sluggish box office year thus far.
