Introducing Endless Mode: A New Games & Anime Site from Paste
Theaters gave Sinners permission to enter this weekend, and it’s showing no signs of leaving any time soon. Ryan Coogler’s vampire fable built a coven large enough to jump to number one at the box office this weekend, dethroning A Minecraft Movie and its chicken jockey after two solid weeks in the number one spot. The Michael B. Jordan-led film ended the weekend with an impressive $45.6 million—the best opening weekend for an original, non-IP-based film in the 2020s so far, per ScreenRant. It eked its way past Jordan Peele’s Nope, which earned $44.4 million in its opening weekend in 2022.
That’s not the only record Sinners broke. It also became the first horror film to ever land an A from CinemaScore, and the ninth highest premiering R-rated horror film of all time, after familiar titles like It, Halloween, and Us. Its characters may not be able to go out in the sun, but the film is certainly relishing its time in the spotlight.
A Minecraft Movie still did well for itself, silver medal or not. Despite new warnings begging fans not to throw popcorn and other projectiles at the screen, the Jack Black film still brought in $41.3 million, bringing its overall total to a whopping $344.6 million in just three weeks. That’s still bigger than Jesus, despite the Easter holiday. Animated biblical epic The King Of Kings clocked in at number three, while The Chosen: Last Supper Part 3 fell to number nine, behind Pride & Prejudice‘s 20th anniversary re-release.
