Maybe cinema is saved? A Minecraft Movie made $157 million at the box office in its opening weekend, marking not only the biggest debut of the year but also the biggest video game adaptation debut ever, per Variety. The movie (which stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge) was expected to perform solidly, with projections resting in the $70 million to $90 million range. Minecraft surpassed that and then some, picking up an international gross of $144 million for a total of $301 million at the global box office.
Though perhaps it’s an exaggeration to say Minecraft will save cinemas, it does offer at least a stay of execution for Warner Bros., which was reportedly dealing with a lot of internal tension over recent flops. Now, the studio can relax a bit and enjoy the bragging rights of coming out on top of The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s 2023 opening ($146 million). And Minecraft‘s better-than-expected opening obviously blows the previous best opening of 2025, Captain America: Brave New World ($88 million) out of the water. Though the comic book film isn’t quite dead in the water, recent events suggest that the superhero may be on its way out and video games (see also: the Sonic franchise, Five Nights At Freddy’s, Uncharted, The Last Of Us, Fallout) are the new king.
Elsewhere at the box office, Bible saga The Chosen holds two top ten spots for The Last Supper; The Last Supper Part 2 opened at the number three position with $6.7 million. Finn Wolfhard’s directorial debut feature (co-helmed with Billy Bryk) Hell Of A Summer opened at number eight with $1.75 million.
