What's on TV this week—The Shards and Star Wars: Visions Presents—The Ninth Jedi

Ted Lasso (Apple TV, Wednesday, season four premiere) Consider it a very long hydration break: It’s been more than three years since Apple TV’s hit soccer comedy last aired a new episode, and a lot has changed in that time for Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and Co. For one, the titular coach is in charge of a brand-new team: AFC Richmond’s first-ever women’s squad, which reunites him with his old friends in the front office, Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) and Keeley Jones (Juno Temple). That trio are reunited with their Ted Lasso teammates Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, and Jeremy Swift; cast newcomers include Tanya Reynolds, Grant Feely, and Faye Marsay. 

Star Wars: Visions Presents—The Ninth Jedi (Hulu and Disney+, Wednesday, limited series premiere) The newest installment of the Disney+ anime anthology will flesh out two earlier shorts from the Visions series, which both center on Lah Kara (voiced by Chinatsu Akasaki in the original Japanese and Kimiko Glenn in the English dub), the daughter of a lightsabersmith living in a distant future far removed from the events of the mainline Star Wars movies. Across eight episodes, we follow our galactic heroine as she continues her quest to become a true Jedi and rescue her kidnapped father (played by Shinichiro Miki and Simu Liu). 

The Shards (FX and Hulu, Wednesday, 9 p.m., series premiere) A Bret Easton Ellis novel adapted by Ryan Murphy for FX? That’s a promise of irresistible pulpiness if we’ve ever heard one. Based on the author’s semi-autobiographical horror tale of the same name, this 1980s-set teen thriller revolves around the wealthy and well-coiffed students of L.A.’s elite Buckley prep school, whose cushy adolescent lives are upended by a mysterious new student (Homer Gere), an arrival that unsettlingly overlaps with the bloody activities of a local serial killer. Igby Rigney, Kaia Gerber, Wes Bentley, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jordan Roth also star.
