Meghan Trainor is Madonna as Drunk History returns

For the first of three new short-form Drunk History episodes coming to Comedy Central’s YouTube channel this month, Madonna’s controversial performance of “Like A Virgin” at the inaugural 1984 MTV Video Music Awards was the chosen topic, with singer Meghan Trainor donning the period-accurate lace and bustier. Trainor was all commitment in vintage lingerie and rhinestone “BOY TOY” belt, slinkily acting out guest narrator and Critical Role performer and voice actor Marisha Ray’s blurry but passionate retelling of the groundbreaking event. 

Naturally, Ray was very drunk on, as the opening chyron promised, “five margaritas and three shots of tequila,” but she assured patient host Waters that her Zapruder film-like analysis of Madonna’s then-shocking awards show crawl down a giant wedding cake indeed freaked out everyone from Tim Baltz’s MTV exec to a disapproving Annie Lennox, who beat Madonna for that year’s Best New Artist In A Video. In true Drunk History drunk-talk fashion, the now-floorbound Ray referred to Madonna as “the Virgin Mary of pop,” before nearly nodding off.
