With two weeks left until Clayface‘s release, it’s a little too late to question why DC Studios made the movie in the first place—but that didn’t stop someone from asking James Gunn exactly that on Threads. According to multiple publications, including TheWrap, one Threads user bluntly asked, “who the fuck asked for a Clayface movie,” in a comment that’s no longer available. The DC Studios co-CEO, always willing to debunk rumors and answer fan questions, didn’t mince words.
“Who tf asked for Back To The Future? Casablanca? There’s Something About Mary? Pan’s Labyrinth? Fury Road? Weapons? The Matrix? Although it may seem like it, Hollywood isn’t a place where the only way to make a movie is the public voting on what IP they want to see that they’ve seen countless times before,” Gunn replied. The Superman writer-director went on to explain that screenwriters Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini “were inspired by a relatively little-known fictional character” and built a story around that figure. Clayface is a bit of a surprising third film in Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, which began with Superman last year and continued with Supergirl this past summer. The shapeshifting, clay-like character has appeared in animated series and live-action shows. But director James Watkins’ standalone Clayface movie, a body-horror starring Tom Rhys Harries, will mark the character’s most prominent appearance to date. Gunn knows Clayface isn’t as popular or as ripe for reboots as characters like Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman, but he’d “take that inspiration a thousand times over some writer trying to make a buck by writing a listless screenplay about a majorly popular character he or she has no passion or feel for.”
