The guy who was reportedly a major liability on the last Pirates Of The Caribbean movie has offered to show up and help out with the next one. That’s right, folks, Johnny Depp has magnanimously agreed to show up for a sixth and perhaps final Pirates film, reviving the franchise that has been dormant since 2017 as abuse allegations against the actor began to surface. But Depp is back in the fold now, currently promoting his take on Scrooge in the upcoming Ebenezer. It was at an event for this movie that Depp suggested that he might do Pirates a favor.
“If things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how they are going to top off the Pirates thing, the only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note,” the actor told Entertainment Tonight. “I will go to work with Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything. Doesn’t matter. If it’s Jerry, I trust him. We have a deep friendship.”
We’ll believe Depp that he and Bruckheimer have a deep friendship, but Depp is also likely a required element of reviving one of Disney’s highest-grossing franchises. This potential new entry/soft reboot of the franchise has been a topic of discussion for nearly a decade; at one point, it seemed like Depp was not going to have anything to do with it, but now that he won one defamation case (while losing another in the U.K.), he’s being welcomed back into the fold. Ebenezer will likely be a test case for how much audiences are willing to reembrace him. If the test screenings were any indication, the only past of Depp’s they care about is the one on the big screen.
