Margaret Qualley to play Amanda Knox in new Hulu series

Knox spent four years in an Italian prison after she was wrongfully convicted of murdering her roommate in 2007

The true crime bubble may be close to bursting (if it hasn’t already), but the dramatized shows just keep on coming. Following in the footsteps of The Staircase and The Girl From Plainville, Margaret Qualley is set to star in yet another series about a case that’s already been picked over by a dozen documentaries and even more podcasts. Per Variety, the Drive-Away Dolls star will play Amanda Knox in an upcoming unnamed Hulu series “based on the true story of how Knox was wrongfully convicted for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher and her 16-year odyssey to set herself free,” according to an official summary. The series will consist of eight, hour-long episodes.

As one can learn via her own books, 2016 Netflix doc Amanda Knox, unauthorized Matt Damon ripoff Stillwater, or a whole slew of other documentaries, series, and films, Knox was incarcerated for four years in Italy after she was accused of murdering her roommate in the apartment they shared while she studied abroad in Perugia. Knox was 20 at the time. Now 36, she has become a speaker and activist for the wrongly accused.

Knox will serve as an executive producer on the show (which means you shouldn’t expect the most objective read on the Italian court’s verdict), along with her husband, Chris Robinson, and Monica Lewinsky. (Yes, that one!) Qualley will also serve as an executive producer, along with KJ Steinberg (also writing), Warren Littlefield, Lisa Harrison, Ann Johnson, and Graham Littlefield.

While Qualley has been largely focused on film recently between Drive-Away Dolls, Poor Things, and Sanctuary, she also has a long and fruitful career in television. The actress received both a Golden Globe and Emmy nomination for her work in the 2021 Netflix series Maid, as well as an additional Emmy nomination for 2019's Fosse/Verdon. She has also appeared in Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood, The Leftovers, and more.
