Nick Reiner will likely use trust fund for defense costs in his parents murder trial

Nick Reiner, accused of killing his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, in December 2025, will likely use the trust fund set up by his slain parents to pay his legal fees. At a probate hearing in L.A. Superior Court today, Deadline reports, lawyers for the accused said they struck a deal that would allow Reiner to access up to half of the cash in his $1.5 million trust fund. Reiner’s attorneys have spent months trying to withdraw funds from the account for their client’s immediate needs in prison as well as to pay for his chosen lawyer, Alan Jackson. Public defender Anita Wu is currently defending him and says the trust is being used to pay for Reiner’s prosecution.

“These issues need to get resolved as quickly as possible. Every week that this trust dispute continues, Nick continues to be deprived of his constitutional right to defend himself using money that is lawfully his to pay for the lawyer he has chosen, which is Alan Jackson,” Wu said. “In the meantime, the money in Nick’s trust continues to be used up by the legal fees of the trustees’ lawyers. It’s Nick’s money that is paying for the lawyers who are trying to keep him from accessing his money. None of that makes any sense, or serves anyone’s interests.”

Reiner was charged with the murder of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, who were found stabbed to death in their home last December, while the accused was living with them. He pleaded not guilty to the charges last August. The issue over his access to the money began years ago. When Reiner turned 30, he became eligible to access $558,000 from the fund but opted not to withdraw.
