Quentin Tarantino's new play gets a title and premiere timeline

Amid sparring with Rosanna Arquette in the press, Quentin Tarantino has also managed to make some progress on that play we heard about last week. The new play is confirmed to be called The Popinjay Cavalier. It will open in London’s West End in 2027, with Variety expecting the play will open in the earlier part of the year. (Perhaps it will play down the street from that Sunday In The Park With George revival.) Casting and the show’s creative team have yet to be confirmed beyond Tarantino as writer and director and producing responsibilities going to Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment. A specific theater has also yet to be confirmed.

The show is set in 1830s Europe and is described as “a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen.” The director previously said it could perhaps end up being his mythic tenth and final feature; if the play is a success, he won’t rule out adapting it for the screen. But “if it is a flop, then I will be done very quickly,” and who’s to say what the British theatre-going audience will make of Tarantino’s stage sensibility.

The Popinjay Cavalier has also launched an official website for anyone hoping to snag tickets when they eventually go on sale. You can check that out here.
