The Star Wars: Tales Of The Underworld trailer features two tense standoffs. Unlike the shady shootout between Han and Greedo, these are old school, Western-style showdowns—seriously, all that’s missing is a tumbleweed rolling through town to make you forget this isn’t the wild, wild West. Instead, it’s a galaxy “outside the law,” as the trailer puts it, where a desperado’s past is bound to catch up with them. Fans will get a taste for the Underworld when it premieres on Disney+ this Star Wars Day, May 4.
Continuing the animated anthology series started with Tales Of The Jedi and Tales Of The Empire, the new series “focuses on the criminal underbelly of the Star Wars galaxy through the experiences of two iconic villains,” according to the Disney+ synopsis. “Former assassin and bounty hunter Asajj Ventress is given a new chance at life and must go on the run with an unexpected new ally, while outlaw Cad Bane faces his past when he confronts an old friend, now a Marshal on the opposite side of the law.”
Though the Star Wars cinematic universe may be somewhat in flux—there hasn’t been a film since The Rise Of Skywalker in 2019, and Lucasfilm has struggled to actually get another one out of the development stage—the television side is thriving. The critically acclaimed Andor comes back for a second season this month, and the Tales Of The Underworld trailer is a continuation of the animated component that quietly kept the franchise afloat between the prequel and sequel trilogies. Tales creator and supervising director Dave Filoni is actually supposed to direct his own live-action Star Wars movie, but thankfully he’s got the TV portion to fall back on, because it’s frankly a much safer bet at the moment. May the Fourth be with you!
