“New Songs Coming… Sunday Feb. 9th at 7pm ET,” the “BMF” singer’s landing page reads as of this writing. That seems clear enough, and the singer does have a good reason to actually release the songs in a timely manner. She’s set to perform with her frequent collaborator and future touring partner Kendrick Lamar in his halftime show, where she may even sing one of the new tracks.
Still, SZA doesn’t exactly have a great track record when it comes to putting things out on time. LANA—technically a deluxe edition of her Grammy-winning 2022 album, SOS—arrived on December 20… a full 15 hours late. The fallout from that chaotic release saw the singer part with her longtime manager and subsequently announce even more songs for LANA, which—you guessed it—also didn’t come out on time. “Just got word all updated Mixes and new songs will be added Jan 6th when the label comes back from holiday. Sorry they can’t do it any sooner… Thank yall for your patience,” she posted on Twitter (X) December 30.
Well, fans have had to be extra patient, because January 6 came and went with no new songs. Hopefully, the wait will be over in a mere two days. The very specific timeframe provided for the drop is a relatively good sign, but you never know. If the songs don’t appear, don’t expect an explanation this time around. “I used to think sharing snippets, personal info + music tea would build connection but it actually just made ppl entitled ungrateful and disrespectful. It’s time to restore the boundary… be blessed,” the artist posted last month, presumably in response to queries regarding the songs’ whereabouts.
At least we know for sure where SZA herself will be on Sunday. After her halftime performance, we may not hear from her for a while. “To fulfill my last 2 album requirements I think I just wanna make peaceful children’s music n get outta here. Then go be a farmer n donate the produce to underserved communities,” she posted in January. Now that’s a goal worth waiting for.
