The How I Met Your Mother pineapple thing has been solved

Fans who have been losing sleep over the unsolved pineapple mystery in How I Met Your Mother can breathe a sigh of relief. Buzzfeed has released an exclusive deleted scene that finally explains the origins of the mysterious herbaceous perennial first introduced back in season one’s “The Pineapple Incident.” In that episode, Ted wakes up after a drunken night with no memory of how a beautiful woman and a pineapple got into his bedroom. While the mystery of the woman was solved, the pineapple enigma become one of the show’s running gags, last referenced midway through the show’s final season when Ted finally gave up on his intense analysis.

As it turns out, the mystery was originally supposed to be solved later in the season in the episode “Daisy,” thanks to the help of Kyle MacLachlan’s recurring character, The Captain. The scene was likely cut in order to entice fans into buying the DVD when it’s released later this month. But thanks to Buzzfeed (which is hosting the clip exclusively on its website), they don’t have to spend money to get closure. Instead they can invest that money in a good therapist who will talk them down from their intense TV addiction.
