Though hardly the first movie-within-a-show since The Rural Juror, The Studio‘s Duhpocalypse might be poised to give the beloved 30 Rock gag a run for its money. Unfortunately for the squeamish (but fortunately for the rest of us), the “duh” in Duhpocalypse isn’t referring to dumb or obvious. It’s, well, it’s a diarrhea apocalypse, where the zombies shoot poop out of their butts instead of biting their victims. Yeah… this writer is a little mad at Seth Rogen for potentially manifesting a real movie with such a nightmarish premise (they made a real MILF Island, so anything can happen), but not that mad because, again, it’s pretty funny.
This sure-to-be blockbuster (if they can just figure out that damn trailer) stars Josh Hutcherson and Johnny Knoxville, in what seems like an Americanized version of Shaun Of The Dead before all that poop starts flowing.
Duhpocalypse isn’t real (yet!), but The Studio absolutely is. The clip zooms out after literally showing its ass to illustrate that diarrhea zombies may be a threat, but they’re nothing compared to a pushy studio exec (Kathryn Hahn) who doesn’t want them in the trailer. “Heartland theater owners” are refusing to show it because of the diarrhea explosion even though, as Ike Barinholtz chimes in, “This is a movie where zombies infect people with their diarrhea. How the fuck else are we supposed to sell this thing?”
It’s a treat to watch this group of extremely famous people deconstruct their own business and spout off one-liners about poop-shooting zombies like “Are we losing the point of the film in the comedy? We made a dark satire about medical information and I don’t want that to get lost.” It’s a shame we don’t actually get to watch Duhpocalypse, but The Studio seems like it’ll be a pretty good stand-in. The series, created by and starring Seth Rogen, premieres March 26 on Apple TV+.
