In the original The Handmaid’s Tale series, June was a successful editor with a full life before the United States turned into Gilead. But there were plenty of people either born into Gilead or too young to remember a time before it. It is from this POV that we enter The Testaments, Hulu’s forthcoming Handmaid’s Tale sequel series. “Back then, we still believed in this world,” says Agnes (Chase Infiniti) in voiceover. “I guess it’s easier to accept a story than believe that the people around you are monsters.”

It seems the catalyst for this change of mind will come from Daisy (Lucy Halliday), a new arrival to Gilead from Canada. While we’d wonder why anyone in their right mind would move in that direction, it seems like Daisy might have a little sedition and activism up her multiple layers of sleeves. The change of heart might also have a bit to do with teenage hormones, which seems to have her questioning the logic of the forced chastity the entire nation is subject to.

Ann Dowd returns to Gilead to star as Aunt Lydia beside Infiniti and Halliday. The first three episodes of The Testaments premiere on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ on April 8. New episodes will roll out weekly after that.
